Statement from Carmelo

I want to apologize to my family, fans and the Denver Nuggets organization for my actions early Monday morning. As a leader, I know they expect a lot from me and I regret putting myself in this situation. I also want to apologize to my teammates for the distraction this has caused. Right now, I need to focus on my family and on basketball as my priorities. I want to thank everyone who has continued to support me during this difficult time. My attorneys have asked that I not comment further, however I will continue to cooperate with all parties involved.

  i think A.I. is a great person for Melo to be around after getting into this trouble...Iverson has been there done that, not with DUI, but Iverson has been thru his share of difficulties as well (most were family related, as Melo mentioned it was a family problem that led hiim to drive that nite)...anyways, IVerson has grown up sigficantly since coming into tha league & he will be a great mentor to help Melo get through this...AND i expect them to grow together as a team thru all this & stun the lakers in round 1

  melo is the best basketball player, im kind of glad ai is gone melos gets more oppurtunities and chauncey is great at sharing the ball but yet a great passer and would much rather pass first... (not to say it helps them deffensiveley too) melo got that DUI and he stepped up and like a man apologized

I have 2 DUIs, it is embarrassing to say the least. Way to step up & apologize, let's hope for your own sake that you truly mean it.

Dude, what were you thinking? Its a shame, and thats pretty much what all endorsment deals will say, along with good bye your a hazard to our image. I wonder how long the Nuggets will keep you after this episode. I hate to see this happen to any player, but your on my home team that I love so much, and now I feel crushed. I wonder what my son thinks of what happened.

i don't approve of or condone what you did - it is incredibly dangerous and a person of your status can always have someone drive for you.

however, there's nothing more you can do except apologize, so good luck in that aspect and i hope you make better decisions next time.

There's a lot to celebrate. Keep the celebration going, keep the good things going. Just remember in basketball you believe in going at it, but it's all in competition and fun. Same thing in life, you can celebrate and deservedly so, but play it safe and play it smart. Hey man, I celebrated after the Sunday game too, but after the bidn'ss of driving was over with. Keep your head held high and do what you do best (play basketball)!! Put the negative attention into your game. Your fans are supportive of you and we realize that we all make or have made mistakes and we learn from them. It's probably tough because your mistakes are a made into a public affair by the media and you are under much more scrutiny than everyone else. The media should give equal amount of attention to all the good things you have done.

Forget being a distraction or the position you're in. Just learn. Please, please, please learn from this. I had two friends killed by a drunk driver. Basketball will be the furthest thing from your mind if you ever get behind a wheel and take a life. That's a lot of weight to carry around your heart. You seem like a nice dude. So, don't let that happen to you. Apology accepted. Just promise you'll learn.

I'm a bit confused why people here are saying you made a "mistake". It's not like you accidentally got drunk and decided to get behind the wheel. You're lucky you didn't kill someone. Thankfully there aren't many people out at 4 a.m. Otherwise, it could have ended up a lot worse.

  I get accidentally drunk all the time..Whoops! too many beers..Fortunately, I hate driving anywhere, and I always make everyone else drive me around so I have never had this problem. Gettiing older and understanding your actions also has a lot to do with this type of infraction. It definitley is wrong, and he should be punished. Unfortunately, any "punishment" they give is not really going to hurt except for the bad press. 1 st dui means LOTS of money to lawyers and fees. Melo has the cash so this is really not going to affect him all that much in that department. Hopefully th ebad press shows him the wrongfulness in his action.

I live in Indianapolis so i deal with players introuble all of the time. I love them and i hate when people say they are just thugs and that the NBA is just thugs. Nobody has been convicted of anything on the pacers so how are they criminals and thugs? Must we not forget that Martha Stewart broke a Federal law and went to jail? So does that make her and all of the other Home and Garden people Thugs? It's pathetic how people treat athletes. Yea you are in the spotlight but that doesn't mean you aren't a regular human being too

  Driving under the influence is not something that gets blown up, it kills thousands of people every year. And Marthat Stewart illegally selling shares of stock is a little different than a guy who just committed a murder leaving Shawne Williams house in Williams truck. Or Jamaal Tinsley and his crew involved in shootings and beating up bartenders, or someone raping someone at Marquis Daniels home. See theres a difference there, these are cases of thuggish behavior when other people are being assaulted, not someone selling stock early with inside information. Hope that clears it up for you. Oh and hopefully Melo learns a lesson and doesn't drink and drive cause he got lucky this time, it could have been much worse if he hit someone. Good luck Melo with this and in the playoffs. I'm sorry Melo, but this latest incident has made me lose all respect for you. People say, oh every one makes mistakes. But when you're making that kind of money, and are in the limelight you need to handle yourself. It's not that hard to get a driver for your late night drunken shenanigans, or would that cut into 13 million too much. Does this not prove among many others that it's rarely smart to give young un-educated people this kind of money? I like you as a player, but I cant say i support you. People are making such a big deal about this DWI - give me a GODD*MN BREAK- As a legal professional in the Denver area , I want everyone to know how much BS it is to make Carmelo face more scrutiny and ridicule than the average person when it comes to these ridiculous DWI laws. Did you know you can have two glasses of wine with a dinner and still not pass the roadside exams because you would be considerably over the legal 0.08 limit? Seriously, how many people every night split a bottle of wine with their wife or husband at dinner and then drive home? They are all just as guilty and as likely to get pulled over and have to face this kind of difficulty. It happens every night by the thousands- Carmelo Anthony just happened to be one of the people arrested for this offense on that night.
Mr. Anthony- I hope you know there are plenty of people out there who know what I am talking about- and not only do they not judge you whatsoever for your 'offense'- but also find it prejudicial that of the (roughly) 30+ people arrested for DWI in the Denver area that same day for DWI, you are singled out and have your personal (yes everyone, this is a personal- not public matter) issues aired out in front of the whole world. So on behalf of those in the Denver community who sympathize with your position, we apologize to you for having to deal with this issue in such a public manner.
As a side note- I hope you show Lamar Odom how to truly play the small forward position and that A.I. can get his revenge on Kobe for the 2001 finals. Light them up !

  And as a legal professional, you know as well as I do that him being a celebrity doesn't "excuse" him from driving while intoxicated. The reason people are keep close tabs on this is because there have been a LOT of coddled treatment of stars in the past when it comes to minor offenses. Driving drunk is driving drunk, regardless who did it. Plus, as an NBA player - he's a role model regardless which way you spin it. Children look up to NBA Stars, especially with the whole "NBA Cares" campaign they've been running this year. Drunk driving is not a "mistake". You can't accidentally get behind a wheel and drive drunk.
  
  Drunk drivers are the number one reason for fatal accidents in this country and he should have to deal with his "mistake" like any other citizen.

    You know Ireland, you are right! Carmelo Anthony should "have to deal with his 'mistake' like any other citizen- so I think every person arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated every day should have to make a press conferenced public apology, endure the community's scrutiny and ridicule, and have to make the apology announcement two weeks prior to any test results which of course, flies in the face of any presumption of innocence.

I don't think that means he should be subjected to a more harsh punishment, but I do think he has a responsibility to make his young fans understand that what he did was dangerous & wrong.

GSWgirl- I have to say you have a good point (and are also fine by the way). People do look up to Carmelo, and he should be able to admit to those fans when he makes mistakes. I was merely trying to point out that DWI's are blown way out of proportion these days- and that while we shouldn't give athletes 'excuses' for negative behavior, we also shouldn't treat them with any less respect and due process than anybody else who might also find themselves getting pulled over after having a couple of drinks.

Carmelo, that's strike # 2. First you tainted your image with the brawl with the Knicks and now this DUI? What's next? You are supposed to be a leader that sets the example to your teammates. You are a role model to young kids that want to be like you. It's a shame that you can't keep a clean image, but I guess a majority of professional athletes can't seem to stay clean. Notice I said "professional" athlete. There's nothing professional about a brawl and a DUI in the NBA! It's time to grow up, Carmelo! If you get a strike # 3, I'm sure the front office will say that "you're out!"

That's what's wrong with the world today, people aren't role modeling their own kids. Melo doesn't live in my house or claim my kids on his taxes as dependents. He has his own kid to screw up if he so pleases. And as far as his team mates go they are all adults. If I get a DUI my job isn't going to suspend me as long as I come to work and still do my job. Why are celebraties held to a higher standard. Let the courts handle this like they would if he was a normal citizen. If the Knicks were not such haters the door for a brawl would have never been opened. Nobody has snachted JR out of the air this year as he dunked all over them and popped off several 3's in their face. (Dan man up) I'am a female that has watched every Nuggets game this year, I see the pressure that they have been under. I'd love to know how you relax because you seem kinda dry. LIGHTEN UP DAN

You are in the spot-light; everything you do is going to be criticized. I wish the media focused as much on the good as they do the bad. Focus on 'why' this happened, as opposed to what happened. Count your blessings you didn't kill yourself or anyone else. Self reflect; pay attention to what you learn and listen. Your heart doesn't lie and most people don't get second chances. Mello, you are young, made a mistake and owned up, learn from it (I think you have, stuff happens, get a taxi, or driver next time). I admire the fact that you owned up to the mistake, and apologized, shows maturity (reiterate to get a driver next time). Now playoffs, you and the team NEED to step it up on defense. Hopefully you guys were a little embarrassed and ticked off that they scored almost every time down.

Saw the game vs the Lakers and actually it gave me some inspiration I didn't have b4. Now.......I hope that U and the team can see and feel that same inspiration. The Lakers r so beatable for the Nuggets. I was convinced more after seeing the game than I was b4. I can't say how proud I am of U for staying composed through those chants. That shows Melo that with each negative that happens n your life......you gain a positive. Let those positives continue 2 spill out on2 the court. It is already evident that U r gonna b the "link" that holds the Nuggets 2gether 2 beat the Lakers. They really don't see yall as a threat 2 them right now. And it doesn't matter whether they see yall as a threat 2 them but....... what does matter is...... "whether yall see yourselves as a threat 2 them" U have 2 know that yall can beat them and just go out there and do "all-the-things" it's gonna take 2 do it. Watch the control of the game. Carter needs to be as composed as any of y'all, including AI. Don't lose this series because of mind games. If they take out your point guard step up and be the passer. You know you can pass. Don't stop the rebounding and all the other good stuff, but you know you can pass. Keep that control in the game and don't let any play or series of plays take you out of it. It's all good melo. you're 23 all 23 year olds make mistakes i just turned 23 and got caught up in the same stuff. like many people before me have said it's different for you because you are in the public eye. everybody looks at you as a role model then something like this happens and they all say,"oh people look up to him he shouldn't be doing this and that!". they don't put into perspective all the awesome things that you have done for people. i don't know it's all crazy to me, but i do know that it takes a big man to publically appoligize for his mistakes, so that right there cancels out the whole incident in my eyes. any way, i am from indiana and i am pretty much the only person in the boring state cheering for the nuggets...lol...but i have put all of my faith into my team, and if you don't make it to the next round, oh well you guys will next year, by the way, all the teams that were down 2-0 are now 2-1 after tonight, it's a sign....good luck guys

Melo, was at the game and saw the good stuff. Don't think that stuff gets missed. But the iso stuff and eating up the shot clock instead of moving the ball.......ahhhhhh might as well pack up and get ready for next year. You don't have to prove you can hit the jumper, and you don't need to prove the refs wrong....it was very obvious they were not giving any calls on your end. Guys not cutting or coming round to get the ball from you to reset....why are they not coming? You need to trust your teammates and teammates need to trust you. Time to transcend all that and prove you can be the better man and win WITH your team, despite all that. All players are given different obstacles, and your obstacles are not so much you can't adjust to them and still be as successful as you have been before. Can't cheer any louder my man, you got to give us something to cheer about now.

I am a Nuggets fan (even though I'm not quite sure I how much I like basketball:). These past 2 years , both you and A.I., helped me appreciate the game more . This year you made watching fun again even in defeat. I live in San Diego and can't see every game but seek them out at at a sports bar if possible. I tell my friends the Nuggets are so talented, so fun to watch. You and AI are the leaders of this team. Your fans (me included) have your back, but frankly you gotta start having ours, too. So the season is history and now there r bigger and better things 2 look forward 2. Of course every1 hoped things would have turned out different but this was another learning experience 2 take n2 the next season. Melo, the thing 2 do now is go n2 the summer with the attitude that this summer will b a time of "A Melo Uprising" 1st I knoiw will b the games n Beijing and that's where I would concentrate on the beginning. Work on the things U know U need 2 get better n. 1 major thing not 2 do this summer or n the off-season...........Make Predictions of any kind.......... about anything. Just remain focused on coming back a new and better Melo. There r a bunch of negative things being said out there by the media, fans and commentators. Most people would say 2 tune all of that out but Melo I think U should make it a priority 2 watch, listen and read all the negative things being said about U. Then get mentally focused and physically ready 2 come back a different Melo n every way. Different attitude, different personality, different game............different Melo. Most people would say leave the past n the past but n this case let the past b probable cause for your success n the future. Reflect back on it and I didn't say.........linger on it but reflect back on it see it for what it was let it b your "MOTIVATIONAL SPEACH" 2 yourself. Nothing about this year was a failure for U and I certainly hope U don't see it that way. This year like other years had some life-learning experiences and some self-learning, soul-searchng experiences for U as have for a lot of other people. I still think the main problem with playing the Lakers was........yall saw them as a threat and U didn't get past that. Next season Melo, see nothing or no1 as a threat 2 U or your team. I know things r gonna b busy for U n the off season but hopefully we can hear from U from time 2 time. Hoping for great things for U Melo.
